Did you Know???
  • Casablanca is ranked 2nd for the American Film Institute 100 Greatest American Movies…Citizen Kane (1941) is number 1.

  • The line play it again, Sam is actually a misquote. It was never spoken, not once in the movie! The line is spoken by Ilsa and it goes… Play it Sam. Play As Time Goes By.

  • Dooley Wilson, Sam, sang As Time Goes By but only pretended to play the piano. It was actually played by Elliot Carpenter in the studio.

  • When people hear the song As Time Goes By, they automatically join it with Casablanca. This song was not particularly written for this movie. It was composed by Herman Hupfeld for the 1931 Broadway revue called Everybody's Welcome.

  • During the movie, a scene shows Renault and Rick chatting outside the café. As they chat, they see the plane flying over them, leaving the airport. In reality, this was impossible because the airport in Casablanca is actually six miles away!

  • In 1988, the piano played by Sam in Paris, not the one in the café, was auctioned by Southbys to an anonymous Japanese collector for $154,000.

  • For $184,000, Howard Koch's Oscar for co-writing Casablanca was sold at auction.

  • What a change of pace??? Found in a field dusting crops, the Lockheed Electra 12A airplane used at the end of Casablanca, was purchased by Disney for use in the Great Movie Ride Attraction in Disney World, Florida. This was something I actually did see myself when I was in Disney World in 1999. They use the plane for the background, identical to the movie. The final scene is dubbed as you float by in a boat past the Casablanca set. Very interesting!

  • For $3,457, Warner Bros. Musician Lyle Ritz acquired the Buick Limited Convertible that drove Rick, Renault and Laszlo to the Casablanca Airport. All identifying insignia was stripped but it was complete with cigarette burns that could have been made by Bogart. In 1970 the car was sold for $3,457 but by 1986, the same car went up for auction for $35,000.
